Food Focus - The Hillside, Hillsborough
The Hillside bar and restaurant reopened its doors following an intensive 2-week refurbishment, costing £200,000. It's a charming local favourite located in the Georgian village of Hillsborough, boasting a stronghold of dedicated customers, both human and canine alike. Don't be put off by the refurbishment, however, as although it has undergone a renewal in style and amenities, the premises stay faithful to it's surroundings and claim as the oldest pub in Hillsborough - dating back to 1752.
Historic Hillsborough's Public House
Keeping in line with the rest of Hillsborough Village, The Hillside has a vast and colourful history. In 1752, the pub was a popular stop off for farmers and villagers. The Plough and Parson's Nose (then named 'Marquess of Downshire') did, however, provide healthy competition. The bar's popularity grew with the introduction of a distillery in 1826. As a result, this distillery, along with a brewery built in the same design as St Malachy's Church, supplied the Hillside via McClune's Court - which is now their beer garden!
Hair of the Dog
A unique aspect of this welcoming pub is the inclusion of man's best friend. Your dog can laze by the fire inside the bar, a home from home. This inclusive outlook tells you all you need to know about The Hillside and it's staff. Furthermore, the bar is stocked full of treats and nibbles for your furry friend to enjoy. It's almost too good to be true!
Menu fit for a Marquis
With a menu that heavily supports local suppliers from all over Northern Ireland, The Hillside's restaurant caters for every need. For meat lovers, the menu includes dishes from both Hannon Meats of Moira and Carnbrooke Meats of Dromara. Additionally, the fish dishes are provided by Walter Ewings, Belfast along with Portavogie prawns, with vegetable sides supplied by Arnotts, Belfast. Also on the menu are dishes which include breads from Yellow Door, Portadown, Rapeseed Oil from Broighter Gold, Limavady, Relish from Ballymaloe and dairy ingredients provided by Draynes Farm in Lisburn. Along with Carnreagh Farm bringing the chips and potato sides - this focus on local produce is what's reinforcing the ever-growing Food & Drink industry of Northern Ireland. Paired with The Hillside's unique charm, it's what's attracting customers back time and time again.
