There are lots of things to see and do. From climbing aboard historic aircraft to seeing traditional skills such as stone carving and blacksmithing. Whether you want to know more about the heritage of the local area or have a family fun day out there is something for everyone to enjoy.
What is European Heritage Open Day?
European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) is a free weekend where a variety of unique spaces and historic buildings are open to the public – many of these places are not open daily, so it’s a chance to explore something new and hear stories that you might not know.
When Is it?
European Heritage Open Days takes place on 12th-13th of September. Each venue will have its own timings and dates in which they are opening. So make sure to check the event listings on our website. Some may also need to be pre-booked.
Are All Events Free?
Yes! All events are free of charge and are open to the public. Some may ask for a voluntary contribution.
What Can I see during EHOD?
At Lisburn and Castlereagh there are lots of historic places (or even aircraft) to see and explore. Take a look at just some of the things you can see and do over the weekend.
Ulster Aviation Society
12th-13th September (10am-5.30pm)
Get ready to step inside the Ulster Aviation Society. Located in two original Second World War hangars, visitors can get up close to — and into the cockpits of — many historic aircraft and helicopters. As well as seeing the aircraft you can talk to knowledgable volunteers as they share the stories behind the machines, before experiencing a state-of-the-art flight simulator.
This is a day out everyone can enjoy, from families sitting in the cockpits and imagining life in the air to aviation enthusiasts who want to learn more about the collection.
HED Conservation Works Depot Moira
12th September (10am-4pm)
Come along to Moira and get an insight into how expert craftspeople work to preserve buildings and structures that might otherwise be lost.
Meet the Conservation Works Team and experience live demonstrations that bring conservation to life including stone carving, lime mortar techniques, joinery, traditional blacksmithing, heritage carpentry, painting, and signwriting—all essential skills used to repair and protect vulnerable historic sites.
Explore behind the scenes in a real workshop and learn how these time-honoured crafts are helping to tackle the challenges facing at-risk heritage today.
Walking Tour of Hillsborough Fort and Courthouse
12-13th September (11am-1pm)
Meeting Point: Front of Hillsborough Fort. Duration: Approx. 2 hours
Step back into Hillsborough's past as you take part in a guided walking tour exploring the town's 17th-century fort and 18th-century courthouse.
Led by knowledable guides, the tour will bring to life the architecture, stories and significance of these remarkable buildings, revealing layers of history hidden in plain sight. Find out fascinating stories such as how Benjamin Franklin stayed at nearby Hillsborough Castle for six days, Then, discover why buildings like these matter now more than ever— and how understanding their history, design, and purpose is key to protecting them for future generations.
The Ballance House
13th September (2pm-5pm)
The Ballance House, a restored 19th century homestead in the rural countryside of Glenavy and the birthplace of John Balance - the 14th Premier of New Zealand. Take a self-guided tour around the House and chat with our knowledgeable guides who will be on hand to tell you more. Learn about the special connections between Northern Ireland and New Zealand, and view the range of original 19th century farming equipment on-site.
Visit Rams Island
12th-13th September (booking essential)
Step back in time and explore the captivating Rams Island, the largest island on Lough Neagh.
Accessible by boat, this tranquil island is steeped in history. Led by expert guides, you can enjoy walks across the island’s scenic trails, learn about the island’s unique wildlife, and discover ancient ruins that whisper tales of centuries past.
This is a free tour, there is a voluntary donation opportunity to cover the cost of the boat if visitors wish. Booking is essential for this tour. To book please email info@ramsisland.org
