The Doss House, Moira: A Rare Survivor of Village Life
Tucked just off Moira Main Street, with shops, cafés and facilities close at hand, the Doss House is a charming and much-loved reminder of the village's early history.
Built around 1680, it is believed to be the oldest building in Moira, dating from a time before the Main Street even existed. It is the last remaining cottage from a row of six that once served the surrounding agricultural land. Most of these cottages were demolished in the 1960s, making this small building an especially rare survivor.
Historically, the cottage offered simple overnight shelter—a place for travelling people to rest and "doss down" upstairs—giving it a unique place in local social history.
Now partially restored by its current owners, the Doss House continues to be carefully preserved as a valued part of Moira's heritage, offering a glimpse into a much earlier way of life in this picturesque village.
