About
During the 1798 Rebellion in Ireland, women played crucial roles but they are often overlooked.
While they were not typically combatants, many supported the rebellion in many ways through vital means, such as nursing wounded, gathering intelligence, hiding rebels, and transporting weapons and supplies. Some women, particularly from the United Irish network, acted as couriers or informants. In some cases women even took up arms like their menfolk. Their contributions were crucial to the rebel effort, though they often faced much more severe punishment if caught. Overall, women’s involvement highlighted their bravery and absolute commitment to Irish independence, despite the gender limitations of the time and the sexual violence they faced, they were a beacon of hope in a sea of war.
