Talk for NIFHS Lisburn Branch, Land: From Tenancy to Ownership by Dr Des McCabe (PRONI), Tuesday, 8 October 2024 @ 7.30 pm in Bridge Community Centre, Lisburn.
Tenancy and ownership of property in Ireland/Northern Ireland from 1840 to 1960. Transition of farmers from tenants (under landed gentry) to owners of land over a hundred years and how this change is reflected in the land registry and registry of deeds.
Des studied archaeology and history in University College Dublin where he completed a doctorate in history (1988), on the subject of rural society in the west of Ireland before the Famine.
He has worked in the Centre for Urban History, Leicester University – on the Famine Project in Trinity College Dublin with the Dictionary of Irish Biography and on the OPW History Project and has been archivist in PRONI since 2013.
