About
Who played the drum in Drumbo? Who built the Castle in Castlereagh? And what can names like Lisburn, Lambeg, and Carryduff tell us about the people who once lived there? Place-names are all around us, but we rarely stop to think about where they came from or what they mean. Yet many preserve clues about the landscape, language, history, and communities of the past. Drawing on examples from across Lisburn and Castlereagh, this talk will explore the stories hidden in local place-names and show how they can help us better understand the places we know today. Along the way, we'll encounter lost landscapes, forgotten histories, and some surprising meanings that have been hiding in plain sight for centuries.
